As a theatre director and producer, I have primarily developed my skills through experience – from running my own student companies to artistically directing professional venues and accepting roles that have extended my knowledge and contacts…
During my time at Bretton Hall College (of the University of Leeds), I developed and honed my directorial skills even though I was actually cutting my teeth as a Theatre Actor. Undoubtedly, my training as an actor has influenced my approach, but ultimately being on-the-job has benefited me the most…
My actor training did, however, advance my abilities in dissecting a dramatic text and constructing a directorial vision for the production ahead. I became fluent in a wide range of theatrical genres and sub-textual understanding, and became familiar with dramatic styles and conventions.
My planning for rehearsal and thorough comprehension of the script (and its potential) allows me to really engage a cast and design/technical theatre team with my vision. In this way, I am able to produce a full theatrical experience (whether contemporary theatre, classical theatre, musical or otherwise) in efficient time and with outstanding quality. I enjoy challenging and stretching myself and my team to explore the limitations of our collective creativity.
My credits, under my former moniker Tuirenn Hurstfield until 2017, cover a wide range of theatrical genres and styles including classical theatre, musical theatre, contemporary drama, physical and mask, storytelling and devised theatre practices.
Recent notable productions include:
From contemporary dramas to physical theatre, from variety performance to musicals, from mask performance to classical text; I have developed a rich range of directorial skills – always managing to create worlds that are effective for audience and production team alike.
I seek to engage my audiences in dynamic and powerful renderings of any text or source material.
I manipulate space, working strongly with performers on their physical, vocal and character-driven connections with the text, and exploit the rich tapestry of language to provide an outing that is of high quality and passion, and true to the intentions of playwright and company.
My approach can be visionary and innovative; or reverent depending on the intention of the company I am working for, and I am capable of directing in a wide range of styles, genres and practitioner-driven methods.
I have worked in commercial and community theatre as director, as well as a strong directing for education portfolio – having led education productions in FE and HE institutions. I have also gained a solid grounding in directing Theatre in Education productions to great effect.
I am currently in the process of setting up a theatre company of my own, for which I will be Artistic Director. The intention of this company is to revive and reawaken old texts, apply a fresh lick of paint to existing contemporary texts and be invigorated by new writing – I am sure there will be many other opportunities along the way.
